About the Presenter:
Christian Clement, PhD is a research fellow at the Ophthalmology Dept. Louisiana State University, New Orleans. Christian obtained his PhD in Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Illinois-Chicago where he established a novel phagocytosis mode of infection by viruses using herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1), a pathogen important as the causative agent of infectious blindness in the US. Christian also holds MPhil in Biochemistry and BSc (Hons) also in Biochemistry with Chemistry from the University of Ghana. Christian has many publications in peer reviewed journals. An Ophthalmological Associate of Research to Prevent Blindness, Inc, Christian is also a member of ASCRS, ARVO, AAAS and the Chicago Area Virology Association. Christian’s interests are wide as he is researching into novel therapies for treatment of viruses and bacteria eye, brain and other diseases especially, herpes simplex virus, adenovirus, Pseudomonas, methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus; Testing of reformulated and new formulation of drugs on animal models for treatment of diseases-eye and neuronal-including Alzheimer's disease, here he is researching into the effects of the interaction of HSV neuronal reactivation and the presence of the human apolipoprotein E gene, ε4 allele in viral neurovirulence, neuroinvasion and concomitant brain/ocular damage; Development of herbal/plant medicines including anti-cancer isoflavones; Gene expression including how hosts process pathogens for identification of critical genes important in pathogenesis; Drug development-phage display technology to yield non-toxic short peptides for treatment of viral, bacterial diseases and management of medical conditions; and animal models and tissue culture techniques for simulating disease and evaluating efficacy of drugs. Christian is also involved in other disciplines not strictly scientific including scoping of Environmental Management Plans for Industries and Real Estate, Environmental Monitoring for Workplace Air quality, Plant Liquid Effluent discharge quality for Oil refineries and plants for motor and industrial lubricating oils manufacture, Environmental Audit, and Impact Assessment for industries ranging from oil storage to intravenous infusions and allied products as well as Analytical Laboratory and Operations for Certification and Accreditation for goldmines and refineries. Christian has been involved with Isolation and Characterization of Local Sulfooxidizing Bacteria at the Obuasi Mine Site for Environmentally Friendly Gold Mining for Anglogold-Ashanti Company and done surveys for Vegetation and Flora and Rehabilitation of Irrigation Projects and Water distribution. Christian is married with a daughter who is now a senior and his hobbies include long walks to exercise, table tennis and watching his daughter play softball in her school team.
